Parliamentary Procedure team to compete at Nationals

DEGRAFF — The Riverside Business Professionals of America (BPA) organization has experienced over a decade of success at the local, regional, and national levels.

This year’s Parliamentary Procedure team is experiencing even more success as they return to the National Conference – this year being held in Anaheim, California. The team is made up of both returning members as well as new members who replaced last year’s seniors. This competition consists of not only an objective test over terms and motions that take place during a formal meeting, according to Roberts Rules, but also consists of running a meeting, based on motions and actions that are given to the team with just 15 minutes to prepare.

The team collectively felt as if their performance at the state level was one of their best. After having placed on the national level last year, this was an impressive statement. So as the top teams were announced during the award ceremony, they were crestfallen to find they had not qualified. And although disappointed, each member stated that they had one of their best performances. Just a week later, after advisor Linsday Wyan asked to review their rubric to see where they should improve for the future, the state director notified the Riverside team that the state judges had miscalculated their score and they in fact DID qualify for national competition. Despite the fact that all arrangements had been finalized, BPA Adviser and business teacher Lindsay Wyan worked tirelessly to secure housing and transportation for the team of seven.

Members of this year’s team is made up of returning members and new members who replaced last year’s seniors: Kaleb Schindewolf, Tyler Knight, Jayden Hoffman, Jaidyn Jackson, Jorden Dunham, Brice Kauffman, and Gavin Osborn.

Wyan said that last year’s leadership competition held in Dallas was a one-of-a-kind experience for this large team. The seniors from last year led the way and laid a tremendous foundation for future success.
