125 Years

October 9, 1898

The members of Company L have been ordered to report at the Armory here on the morning of Oct. 15 at 9:30 o’clock, with full equipment, preparatory to going to Columbus. The Third regiment is under orders to report at Camp Bushnell on that day. The regiment is expected to be in camp there at least 10 days. At the end of that period, it is expected the men will be mustered out of the military service.

The crowd was so great Saturday afternoon and evening during the millinery opening at Thedieck’s department store, that the people were compelled several times to wait before it was possible to find standing room in the large, new millinery and cloak room.

Tonight, is the regular meeting night for city council. There has not been a meeting for a couple of months on account of a quorum not being present. There will be a meeting tonight if enough of the members can be gotten together.

100 Years

October 9, 1923

Members of city council at their meeting last night gave approval to an ordinance to improve Enterprise street by grading and graveling. They also received a petition from property owners for the extension of West avenue south of Mound street. The petition was referred to the street and alley committee.

Cooperating with the local program on fire prevention, members of the Sidney Kiwanis club, following their noon luncheon tomorrow, will visit all schools in the city with fire department and city officials. At each school a fire drill will be conducted and members of the club will pass out literature on fire prevention to the children.

A southbound freight train struck a wagon being driven across the B. & O. tracks by William Mann at Botkins this morning. The wagon was demolished but Mann escaped with a few scratches and bruises. One of the horses was also injured, but not seriously.

75 Years

October 9, 1948

Arrangements for two important meetings – the visit of President Harry S. Truman at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon, and of Frank J. Lausche to Sidney next Wednesday evening – comprised the main business of the Shelby County Democratic Central committee at its meeting last evening in the court house. Lehman said that he, along with William B Swonger, E.C. Amos, Millard Jackson, and Miss Virginia Lehman, would board the presidential special in Dayton.

Walter C. Meranda, assistant cashier of the First National Exchange Bank, was elected vice chairman of Group Two of the Ohio Bankers Association at the annual meeting of the group held yesterday afternoon and evening at the Lima Shawnee Country Club.

Students in the Sidney schools will have an opportunity to see President Truman during his stop here Monday. All schools will dismiss for the noon hour and not reconvene until 2 p.m.

50 Years

October 9, 1973

A new patrolman has been selected to join the Sidney Police force, from an eligibility list of six, according to Chief Jack Wilson.

He is Larry Hudson, 24, and will begin his duties Sunday. Hudson is a former Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy and a graduate of Jackson Center High School.

NEW YORK – George Stone hopes today to keep a promise he made to Mets teammate Jerry Koosman prior to Monday’s near riotous third National League play-off game between New York and the Cincinnati Reds.

“George told me before the game that if I win today, he would win tomorrow,” said Koosman who pitched the Mets to a 9-2 victory and a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five series.

Ecology Club members at Whittier Elementary School are preparing for a paper drive, which is scheduled for Oct. 29 from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Members of the Whittier Ecology Club are Eva Mullen, Lacie Pollard, Matt Casey, Devon Langhorst, Caley O’Connor, Tony Martin, Amanda Bolin, Sarah Broughton, Eric Castle, Erinn Dillon, Ben Danklefsen and Nikki Niswonger. Advisors for the Ecology Club are teachers Richlynn Moore and Karen Hecht and fifth-grader Erica Dillon.

“The Ohio Eye Laser Center is a newly developed, open-access laser center for vision correction,” said Dr. Michael Stark, a Sidney ophthalmologist and the center’s medical director.

The Ohio Eye Laser Center is nearly ready to open at Wilson Memorial Hospital. The first day of business is planned for Oct. 16. Some 30 laser procedures are scheduled that day. More than $500,000 has been invested in the equipment.

Cast members Shari Hartsock, William and Dale Given are currently preparing for their joint production of “The Taffetas” with Sock and Buskin Community Theatre in Sidney. Another cast member, Jerry Zimmerman, is the director/choreographer and Dee Hartsock is the musical director for the show to be presented in Sidney tonight and Saturday and October 15-17 at 8 pm at the Monarch Community Center Cameo Theatre in Sidney.
