Girls basketball notes: Anna can’t keep up with West Liberty-Salem

ANNA — Anna couldn’t keep up with West Liberty-Salem and lost 68-50 in a nonconference game on Thursday.

The Tigers led 38-26 at halftime. Anna started the third with a big run and pulled as close as five, but West Liberty-Salem boosted its lead to 11 at the end of the third.

The Rockets dropped to 8-7 overall with the loss. They’re scheduled to host Fairlawn on Saturday.

Brenna Cobb led the Rockets with 14 points. Ava Reed scored 13 and Jenna Wolters scored 12.

Sidney wins fifth straight

The Yellow Jackets dominated Xenia 61-33 on Wednesday in Sidney. It’s the fifth straight win for the squad, which improved to 13-3 overall and 11-1 in Miami Valley League play.

Sidney led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, but Jordan Scully scored eight points in the second to help lead a 21-8 scoring edge in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets outscored Xenia 14-7 in the third and 16-12 in the fourth.

Scully led Sidney with 24 points while Kiara Hudgins scored 14 and Larkyn Vordemark scored 12.

The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to travel to Stebbins (9-5, 9-3) on Saturday and West Carrollton (9-5, 8-3) on Wednesday for key MVL games.

Sidney has a two-game lead in MVL standings; aside from the Indians and Pirates, Tippecanoe (8-4, 7-3) is also in contention. The Yellow Jackets beat all three in the first round of MVL play.

Fort Loramie rebounds after Classic in the Country loss

Fort Loramie lost 54-42 to Thornville Sheridan in the Classic in the Country on Saturday at Berlin Hiland but bounced back with a 70-33 win over Botkins in Shelby County Athletic League play on Monday.

Skyler Albers led Fort Loramie with 21 points in Monday’s win while Summer Hoying scored 14. Avery Brandewie scored 13 points and had six rebounds and three assists. Victoria Mescher added 11 points and had five steals.

Fort Loramie is enjoying a long break; the Redskins (14-2, 8-0 SCAL) are scheduled to play at Botkins next Thursday.

Fort Loramie drops to No. 2 in AP poll

The Redskins dropped to No. 2 this week’s Division IV Associated Press state poll.

Berlin Hiland (12-0) jumped up to No. 1, edging Fort Loramie by one point in voting (though the Redskins received two more first-place votes).

Lehman Catholic wins two in a row, loses to Miami East

Lehman Catholic beat Bradford 49-37 on Monday and Stivers 44-27 on Tuesday but lost 47-11 to Miami East in Three Rivers Conference play on Thursday. All three games were at Schlater Family Gymnasium.

Lehman (4-10, 0-9 TRC) is scheduled to host Bethel on Saturday in TRC play.

Lehman senior Mara O’Leary scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds on Monday. Junior forward Kailee Rank scored 13 points on Monday and scored 11 on Tuesday.

O’Leary ranks second among TRC players with an average of 8.9 rebounds per game and ranks fourth with an average of 12.2 points per game.

While the Cavaliers struggled Thursday against Miami East’s defense, so have many teams. The Vikings (15-0, 9-0) are ranked No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press Division III state poll; they’re allowing an average of 24.7 points per game. They’ve held four teams under 20 points this season, including Milton-Union (12) and Bethel (13) in TRC play.
