Baseball: Undefeated start continues for Russia

RUSSIA — Russia kept up its undefeated start on Tuesday by beating Jackson Center 9-0 in a Shelby County Athletic League game.

After an 11-0 win over Botkins on Thursday, the Raiders are 9-0 overall and 5-0 in SCAL play. They were scheduled to host Coldwater on Friday and are scheduled to travel to Fort Loramie for a key SCAL game on Monday.

The Raiders scored one run in the second. Hayden Quinter drew a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. He then scored on a wild pitch.

The Raiders scored three runs on two hits, one walk and one hit batter in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

Xavier Phlipot hit a single to left on a hard ground ball, then Zane Shappie was hit by a pitch. Braylon Cordonnier drew a walk, which drove in one run.

Hayden Quinter then hit an RBI double to center field to drive in another run and give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. Brayden Monnin hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another run before the end of the inning.

The Raiders scored four runs on five hits and one walk in the fifth. Phlipot and Shappie each singled to start the inning. Cordonnier drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, then Quinter hit an RBI single to left field to push the lead to 6-0.

After a ground out, Jude Counts hit a one-run triple to center field to push the lead to 7-0. Ross Fiessinger followed with an RBI single to left.

The Raiders added another run on two hits in the sixth. Cordonnier hit an RBI single to right in the inning.

Phlipot, Shappie and Quinter each had two hits for Russia. Cordonnier and Quinter each had 2 RBIs.

Cordonnier picked up the win on the mound. He pitched six innings and gave up three hits. He didn’t walk any batters and struck out nine.

Russia finished with 10 hits while Jackson Center had three. Neither team committed an error.

Bryson Roberts was charged with the loss for Jackson Center. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one batter.

Roberts was 2 for 3 at the plate with one double.

Jackson Center (4-3, 2-2 SCAL) is scheduled to travel to Fairlawn on Saturday for an SCAL game.

Fiessinger picked up the win on the mound for Russia on Thursday against Botkins. He pitched four innings and gave up one hit while striking out four batters. Caleb Unverferth pitched the fifth inning of the run-rule win and struck out two batters.
