Player of the Year honors for Bosway, Albers

The Miami Valley Baseball Coaches Association announced its All-Dayton Area squads for the 2016 season, and two Shelby County standouts earned Player of the Year honors.

Anna senior Luke Albers, a two-time County Player of the Year, earned the same honor on the Dayton Division 3 All-Area team, sharing the honor with Arcanum’s Connor Pohl, who will play for Ohio State next year.

Albers took a .507 batting average into this week’s action, with 35 hits, eight doubles, four triples and five homers. He has also driven in 40 RBIs, tops in the area.

In Division 4, Lehman’s Nate Bosway was named the Player of the Year. Bosway, the Northwest Central Conference player of the year, is hitting .493 on the year with 34 hits, and has scored 34 runs and driven in 37. He has six doubles and four homers, and is also one of the club’s top pitchers.

He’s seen limited action on the mound after recovering from surgery, but is 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average in 151/3 innings.

Division 3

Meanwhile, in Division 3, five more Anna players were named All-Area. Colin Wuebker was first team at first base and Aidan Endley first team as a utility player.

Pitcher Mitchell Lindsey, infielder Zach Watren and outfielder Kain Luthman were all named to the second team.

Wuebker is hitting .353 with 28 runs and 18 RBIs, Watren is at .340 with 15 runs scored, and Luthman is at .379 with five homers, 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored. His five homers ties teammate Albers for the area lead.

Lindsey gave the Rockets quality time on the mound, with a 5-0 record and a 1.28 ERA in 271/3 innings. Wuebker is hitting .353 and has scored 28 runs, and Endsley is hitting a healthy .481, with a team-high 11 doubles, 15 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

In addition, Anna had six players named All-Academic, including two, Nathan Stiefel and Kyle Wuebker, earning the honor for the second time.

Also named All-Academic were Nathan Frilling, Colin Wuebker, Joel Cummings and Lindsey.

As for Albers, he has been invited to play in the Mizuno All-Ohio All-Star Game, becoming the first Anna player to be selected. And his coach, Kristian Althauser, will be there with him after being invigted to be on the coaching staff for the three-game series.

Althauser was also named the MVBCA Division 3 Coach of the Year after his Rockets were ranked No. 1 in the final poll and No. 3 in Ohio.

The Versailles Tigers had six players mentioned in Division 3.

Pitcher Brett McEldowney and outfielder Kurtis Rutschilling were both first team, and four others were Honorable Mention, including pitcher Cole Niekamp, catcher Kyle Subler, first baseman Jared Niekamp and outfielder Keaton McEldowney.

Division 4

In addition to Bosway, Lehman had three other players named to the first two teams, including pitcher Parker Riley on the first team with Bosway, and catcher Max Schutt and ourfielder Stephen Monnin on the second team.

Riley was Lehman’s top pitcher. He is currently a perfect 10-0 with a 1.40 ERA.

Schutt is hitting .385 with 24 runs and 29 RBIs, and Monnin is hitting .397 with 19 runs scored and 21 driven in.

In addition, utility player Brandon Barhorst and infielder Dylan Arnold were both named to the Speical Mention list.

Russia’s Zach Sherman was named to the first team as an infielder and teammate Conner Monnin was first team in the outfield.

Sherman is hitting .398 for the Raiders, with two homers and nine doubles along with a team-high 28 RBIs. Monnin is at .426 onthe year, with a team-high 18 stolen bases.

Teammate Jonah Counts was named to the Honorable Mention list as an infielder.

Fort Loramie senior Drew Wehrman was also a second-team selection, as an infielder. Wehrman is hitting .346 for the Redskins. Teammates Daniel Berning and Jacob Kitzmiller were also named to the Honorable Mention list.

Luke Bergman, a junior from Botkins, earned second-team honors as a utility player. He led the Trojans in most offensive categories, and hit around .450 this season.

Riverside put two players on the second team in infielder Dakota Bollinger and oufielder Connor Cotterman. Bollinger hit .393 for the Pirates and Cotterman .414. Bollinger scored 33 times and Cotterman drove in 34 runs.

Riverside’s Caleb Stevens, a sophomore, was named to the Honorable Mention list, as were senior Zach Jolly and freshman Howie Ludwig of Houston.
