SIDNEY — The Altrusa Club of Sidney has named its 2016 scholarship recipients.

Grants of $1,000 each were presented by Altrusa member Missy Rivera to Russia High School Graduate Erin Gaerke, daughter of Jason and Judie Gaerke, and Sidney High School Graduate Aaron Jensen, son of Ken and Sherri Jensen.

Gaerke will be studying operations management/agricultural communications at The Ohio State University.

Jensen will attend the Wright State University majoring in electrical engineering.

The club’s scholarship committee annually solicits applications through the media and high school guidance counselors in Shelby County. In addition, students who have graduated from other high schools but lived in the county for at least five years are also eligible for consideration as are Shelby County students who are presently enrolled in college. All applicants are evaluated on need, academics, strength of references, school and community activities, and volunteerism.

Funds used to award the grants are mainly procured from the Sidney Altrusa’s sale of Elder Beerman Coupon Books and the Club’s Adult Spelling Bee.
