SIDNEY— A teacher at Lehman Catholic High School has received the 2016 Distringuished Teaching Award.

After the death of longtime Piqua businessman Stanley Harrison, owner and operator of Barclay’s Clothing, his family wanted to establish a scholarship in his name to benefit students at Lehman Catholic High School.

After looking at the number of scholarships already available to high school graduates, Harrison’s wife, Sammye, and son, Bert, decided to recognize the often overlooked educators who make it possible for so many students to win those scholarships to college. They were convinced that the reason for student success at Lehman was its dedicated staff, so the Stanley Harrison Family Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 2007.

The 2016 Distinguished Teaching recipient is Tony Wagner, a faculty member in the Math Department who teaches precalculus, AP calculus, statistics and College Credit Plus for Edison State Community College. In addition to his role at Lehman, Wagner teaches algebra at Holy Angels School in Sidney.

Wagner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1977 from Wright State University, and received his Master’s in Education in 1980 from the University of Dayton. Wagner has been in education for 39 years. This is his third year at Lehman Catholic High School. Prior to teaching at Lehman, Wagner taught at and retired from Sidney City Schools.

Lehman Principal Denise Stauffer said it best.

“It was a great honor to present Tony with the Distinguished Teaching award. He is a caring teacher who encourages his students to do their best. He is doing an exceptional job at Lehman and is very dedicated to the school,” said Stauffer.

“I am so grateful to the Harrison family and very honored to have been chosen by my fellow teachers for this award,” said Wagner. “I truly value education and love the community I work with. The Lehman family is very welcoming and helpful. Any of the teachers here at Lehman are just as deserving to receive this honor.”

Wagner and his wife, Cindy, live in Sidney. They have three daughters who graduated from Lehman Catholic High School.
