CENTERVILLE — Everything went Sidney’s way in the first half Wednesday night in the Division 1 Sectional semifinals at Centerville. But the second half belonged to Springboro, who upset the No. 4 seeded Yellow Jackets 57-53.

The loss ended Sidney’s season at 18-6.

The Yellow Jackets scored the game’s first 15 points before settling for a 19-8 lead after one quarter. Then they actually extended the lead out to 33-20 at the half.

But things changed in a big way in the second half, and the high-powered Sidney offense managed only 20 more points the rest of the way, allowing the Panthers to rally back and win it.

Sidney led 36-27 with 5:23 left in the third quarter, and even though Springboro cut the lead down to 36-32, the Jackets still took a 44-39 lead into the final period.

But the Panthers scored the first six points of the final quarter to take a 47-44 lead, and the Jackets would not regain the advantage until Isaiah Bowser scored for a 52-51 lead. However, Springboro went on a 6-0 run to lead 57-52 with just 11 seconds remaining.

Andre Gordon wound up with 17 to lead the Jackets and Bowser finished with 14.

Anna 69, Preble Shaw. 61

VANDALIA — Anna led by double figures in the first half, but found itself trailing 47-44 with one quarter to play.

That’s when they shifted into a higher gear and poured in 25 fourth-quarter points to pull out a 69-61 victory over Preble Shawnee in Division 3 Sectional semifinal play at Vandalia Butler Wednesday.

The Rockets, now 15-9, take on No. 2-seeded Bethel Saturday at 7 p.m. at Vandalia for the right to advance to the district tournament.

“We got off to a great start and we kinda settled,” said Anna coach Nate Barhorst. “We were up as much as 12 in the first half, but they came back to lead by as much as five in the third quarter. But we settled down and got some key transition buckets, and some big threes by Griffin Doseck and Mason Platfoot. We had a huge fourth quarter.”

The Rockets had five players in double figures. Doseck had 13, Platfoot, Joel Cathcart and Wyatt Bensman all had 12 and Nathan Frilling added 10.

Division 4

Russia 80, Houston 44

PIQUA — The top-seeded Russia Raiders advanced to the lower-bracket championship of the Piqua Division 4 Sectional Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday with a 80-44 victory over County rival Houston in semifinal action.

The Raiders, now 18-5, will take on another County rival, Fort Loramie, Saturday at 7 for the right to advance to the district next week.

Houston, meanwhile, finishes with a 3-20 record. Three of those losses came to the Raiders.

The Wildcats hung tough for a quarter. A three by Dylan Hensley and two free throws by Cameron Arnold gave Houston an 8-5 lead with five minutes left in the opening stanza, and only a three-pointer by Sam Cook at the buzzer gave Russia the lead heading to the second quarter at 14-13.

But that’s when the Raiders took over. They scored 16 of the first 17 points in the period to take a 30-14 lead on a layup by Jack Dapore, and were never threatened again. The halftime margin was 37-18.

Four Raiders scored in double figures. Dapore had 15, Drew Poling 12, Daniel Kearns 11 and Hunter Cohee 10. Cohee made it a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Russia canned 32 of 59 from the field for 54 percent and pounded the Wildcats on the boards by a 43-24 margin. Cole Tebbe hadnine rebounds for the Raiders.

Houston got 14 points apiece from Arnold and Hensley, with 12 of Arnold’s points coming at the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds and four steals.

Houston shot just 25 percent fromt he field on 10-for-40 and was 18-for-31 from the line. Russia was 9-for-11 on free throws.

Loramie 51, Triad 39

PIQUA — Third-seeded Fort Loramie had its hands full with Triad in the second semifinal game played Wednesday at Piqua, but prevailed 51-39 to advance to the finals on Saturday.

The Redskins, now 19-5, will play County foe Russia at 7 p.m.

The Redskins started strong, scoring the first eight points and leading 10-2 with half of the opening quarter gone. But by the end of the period, Triad had battled back to within 13-11, and was still down just three at the half at 23-20.

Loramie actually lost the lead in the second half, and trailed by one after three periods. But the Redskins turned it up a notch in the final period and outscored Triad 22-9.

Dillon Braun was outstanding for the Redskins, scoring 26 points and hitting all 12 of his free throw attempts. Austin Siegel was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor in scoring 12 points, and Evan Berning handed out six assists.
