MAC picks Ahrens

Versailles junior standout Justin Ahrens has been named the Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in boys basketball after leading the Tigers to the conference championship this season.

Ahrens, who has already signed to play for Ohio State after high school, was the area’s second-leading scorer during the regular season at 23.4, and the 6-foot-5 forward also averages 8.9 rebounds per game. He shot 60 percent from two-point range and 42 percent from behind the arc, and also handed out 77 assists.

He was joined on the first team by teammates AJ Ahrens and Alex Wendel. AJ Ahrens was the team’s second-leading scorer at 10.1 and the second-leading rebounder at 4.5. Wendel averaged 7.4 points and led the team in assists with 109.

Also named to the first team were Aaron Ernst of Minster, Nick Topp of New Knoxville and Nathan Bruns and Tyler Mescher of Marion Local.

Topp led the Rangers in scoring with a 13.3 average, and also averaged 5.8 rebounds per game.

Versailles head coach Travis Swank was named the Coach of the Year.

Second-team selections included the rest of Versailles’ starting five in senior Conner Custenborder and junior Keaton McEldowney, along with Tyler Prenger of Marion Local, Mike Ketner of Minster and Nolan Bornhorst of New Bremen.

Bornhorst is just a freshman and wound up leading the Cardinals in scoring at 12.2 per game, and in three-pointers with 27 during the regular season.
