March 29, 1892
The churn makers and lumber men, Anderson and Carothers, are exceedingly busy. Auglaize County seems to be well pleased with Sidney prices, for in the last two weeks more than 500,000 shingles, the material for about 20 houses and the greater part of 11 barns have gone to our neighboring county. Anderson and Carothers are working 28 employees and have several men on the road.

Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of the Junior Shakespeare club and according to the usual custom among Shakespearian clubs, the event was appropriately celebrated by a banquet at the home of Mrs. J.O. Amos. Every member of the club was present, most of them accompanied by their best gentleman friend.

A dispatch from Washington today advises that the President has called Congress into extra session of Apr. 2 to take action on the state of the war, which admittedly exists between the United States and Germany. His proclamation does not state specifically that the President considers a state of war exists, but leaves the question for action by Congress, when assembled.

Despite the flat statement of the War Department that there is no change in the decision to let demobilization of national guard units proceed, Major General Thomas Barry, commander of the Central Department of the Army, has suspended further mustering out of our Ohio regiments in addition to other units. The Third regiment is one of those subject to the order.

The public meeting on beautification, gardening and other improvements held last evening by the Commercial club in its club rooms brought a large turnout of interested citizens. An interesting program on a variety of subjects for the benefit of the city was presented and the interest manifest by those in attendance indicates continued efforts along this line.

March 29, 1942
Because of the increased demand of citizens to take the Red Cross first aid course, it was announced today by Frank H. Marshall, chairman of the Shelby county chapter of the American Red Cross, that as soon as the present series of classes are completed, additional classes will be started. Marshall noted that there is a need for instructors.

Captain Brightwell, of the Dayton Fire Department, and director of civilian defense for that city, was the guest speaker at the regular weekly luncheon meeting of the Sidney Kiwanis club. He outlined how more than 20,000 individuals in Dayton had been registered for civil defense activities.

George Bradley, of Sidney, and Kathleen Stang, Fort Loramie, have been announced as winners of scholarships for high school seniors at the University of Dayton. Ralph Wehrman, Fort Loramie, and Thomas Eshman, Sidney, were named as alternates following tests taken last month.

A program for mobilization of the nation’s industrial manpower may be deferred for the present, President Roosevelt indicated today.

March 29, 1967
Miss Leah Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Evans Johnson, 874 Chestnut avenue, has been elected president of her dormitory, Raymond House, at Vassar College for 1967-68. A 1965 graduate of Sidney High School, Miss Johnson, a sophomore, is centering her studies in mathematics.

When the Sidney American Legion Auxiliary members met Monday evening, March 13, the Buckeye Girls’ State delegates, to be sponsored by the local group, were named. These girls will attend the girls’ state event planned the week of June 17 on the campus of Capital University, Columbus. The delegate from Sidney High School is Miss Judy Hunter, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. T.W. Hunter, 582 Russell road. From Holy Angels High School Miss Frances Sandvig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Sandvig, 422 Edgewood street, was selected as the delegate for this 21st annual session of Buckeye Girls’ State.

Don Bailey led the Jackson Center League at Wapakoneta Recreation with a 638 series. Scoring games of 222, 235 and 181, Don paced Carl’s Marathon to a 3-1 victory over Breece and Yeasel.

You know there were some folks who never thought our marriage would last. Raymond Zimpher made that statement with a big smile on his face. “We sure fooled them” Jeannette (Edwards) Zimpher adds dryly. “They sure didn’t know what they were talking about. The Zimphers, who have resided at Fair Haven Shelby County Home for the past three and on-half years will mark their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday. Mr. Zimpher, who celebrates his 95th birthday on July 2 and Jeannette, who turns 88 the following month were married on April 1, 1922.

Head Sidney coach Dave King recently talked with four of his key players as he begins his 17th year with the Yellow Jackets. Seniors Craig Bishop, Steve Davis, Todd Cagle and Rob Hall will play for King this year as King try’s to improve on his record of 217 wins.
