May 1, 1892

The “village improvement” committee met this morning in the office of S.J. Hatfield and made preparations for an organization to improve Sidney. A constitution was drafted, with a roster of the necessary officers. Officers will be elected and the constitution given approval at a meeting to be held in the assembly room of the court house Thursday evening. At least one-half of the executive committee of 10 will be women.

100 Years

May 1, 1917

The celebration of Patriotic Day was a grand success in every particular. While the crown in attendance was not as large as it would have been had the weather been more inviting, it was unusually large and the parade was the largest ever held in Sidney. It required 50 minutes to pass a given point. Talks were given by Col. Hubler, commander of the Third regiment, and Congressman Ralph Cole of Findlay.

Capt. Rhoades reported the enlistment of four new recruits today. They include Clyde Grate, of Anna, and Raymond Darnell, of Jackson Center, for Co. L., and Harry Davis and Lonie Shearer, both of Jackson Center, for the Third regiment band. All of the boys left for Cincinnati this afternoon.

75 Years

May 1, 1942

Miss Helen Lewis was inducted last night as president of the Delta Beta Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority during the chapter’s annual observance of Founder’s Day at the country club.

Seven pledges were named by members of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Theta Tau when they met last evening in the home of Miss Dorothy Duncan, the president. The group included: Miss Margaret Ann Young, Misses Mary Jane and Jo Enders, Mrs. William Joslin, Jr., Mrs. Harry K. Hess, Mrs. Huber Beery, and Mrs. James Zimmerman.

50 Years

May 1, 1967

The United Telephone Company of Ohio Monday presented a plaque for community service to The First National Exchange Bank of Sidney. The award cited the bank’s Time and Temperature service offered the last nine years.

Over 5.8 million telephone calls have been received by the service, officials said.

25 Years

May 1, 1992

LOS ANGELES — National Guard troops and police moved today to try to take back neighborhoods lost to looters, brick throwers and arsonists in the worst urban rioting in the United States since the 1960’s.

Police said at least 27 people died, 1,235 were injured, and more than 3,000 were arrested since rioting erupted following Wednesday’s acquittal of four white policemen in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King.
