SIDNEY– The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA held a reception on Thursday, May 25, to honor the 2023 recipients of the Lee E. Schauer Memorial and Jim Lantz Memorial Scholarships.
Connor Simpson, son of Jackie and Frederick Simpson, of Sidney, and a graduate of Sidney High School, was recognized as the 2023 recipient of the one-time $1,000 Lantz scholarship. Simpson plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to study Biology.
Jaycee Roach, daughter of Megan Davis and Hugh Roach, of Sidney, was recognized as the 2023 recipient of the Schauer scholarship, the largest non-governmental scholarship in Shelby County in the amount of $12,000 paid over four years. Roach plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to study Speech and Hearing Pathology.
Both recipients are YMCA members and have been involved in a wide variety of volunteer activities in Shelby County, with Simpson volunteering for numerous community organizations including the Shelby County United Way, Agape, the YMCA, Kiwanis, Aktion and FISH. He has served in numerous leadership positions at Sidney High School, including captain of the varsity soccer team and Student United Way representative. He has been described as, “reliable, driven and able to manage his time well in order to navigate both a challenging academic load and numerous extracurricular activities.”
Roach has volunteered for numerous community organizations including local youth sports camps, the YMCA, Salvation Army, Agape and Holy Angels. She has been involved in numerous sports at Sidney High School including soccer, volleyball, basketball and track and field (state qualifier). She has been described as, “empathetic, thoughtful, reliable, patient, and hard-working.”
