January 30, 1899

John Steinle has placed a fine oil painting of the Wise pond and club house in his saloon. The painting is about six feet wide and three feet high and is a very good likeness of the scenery about the club house. It was painted by Ed Stephenson.

At the debate at the McCloskey school house next Thursday evening. The subject will be: “Resolved, that the United States has treated Spain generously in the recent treaty of peace.”

The canal is completely frozen over.

100 Years

January 30, 1924

Members of city council last evening approved an ordinance authorizing employment of detectives or secret service officers to secure enforcement of prohibition laws.

The stockholders of the Jackson Center Farmers’ Cooperative Creamery Co. held their annual banquet and election of officers last evening at the Sollman restaurant. Frank Baughman was named president: C.G. Clayton, vice president; W.C. Meranda, secretary-treasurer. Other directors are: G.W. Moodie, J.M. Pence, and L.H. Sollman.Arthur Sprague continues as manager.

75 Years

January 30, 1949

Rev. and Mrs. F.J. Mittermaier, of St. Jacob Lutheran Church, are probably Shelby county’s No. 1 busy couple these days engaged in a German letter translating business in their home at the parsonage in Anna. The Mittermaiers have just completed translating the 500th letter from Germany expressing deep gratitude to the people of Shelby county for the “Neighbors in Action” program of last fall, when some 8,000 cartons of food were sent from this county to West Germany.

Fifteen Sidney High school students were possessors today of driver’s licenses, having completed four months of concentrated study in the first driver-training class in the history of the school.

50 Years

January 30, 1974

Concern was expressed this week by Fire Chief Lyle Baker that the increased number of rescue squad responses so far this month have on several occasions reduced the number of available men on duty at the fire department to one.

Five local builders and two sanitarians from the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department met with Shelby County Commissioners yesterday to voice objections to proposed subdivision regulations drafted by the Shelby County Regional Planning Commission. One clause builders objected to is a provision that prohibits builders from selling or offering to sell lots in a subdivision before the subdivision is completed.

Shelby County Sheriff Don Knasel and Deputy Sgt. Richard Steinke drove to Clearwater, Fla.yesterday to receive a prisoner and escort him back to Shelby County where he faces charges of breaking and entering and possession of burglary tools.

A lively group of Central Elementary School students were “all ears” Tuesday when Dr. Richard Flinn, local veterinarian, talked to them on the care of animals, including a broken-tailed calf and a gorilla with a tooth-ache.

MINSTER-Minster Civic Association last night endorsed a 2.96-mill vocational education multi-purpose levy to be placed before voters in Auglaize and Mercer Counties at a special election Feb. 26.

NEWPORT – Nineteen recording artists will be coming to Shelby County this summer for Country Concert at Hickory Hill Lakes. The 19th annual music and camping festival will be held July 8-11 at the 300- acre site along Ohio 66.With the final contracts signed, promoters have announced the fol- lowing day-to-day lineup:

•July 8- B.J. Thomas, Loretta Lynn and Sammy Kershaw.

July 9-Michael Peterson, JoDee Messina, Neal McCoy and John Michael Montgomery.

•July 10 – The Warren Brothers, The Wilkinsons, Lonestar, Blackhawk, Terri Clark, Martina McBride and Alabama.

July 11 – Mark Wills, Linda Davis, Charlie Daniels Band, Billy Ray Cyrus and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“We’re real excited about this year’s lineup,” promoter Mike Barhorst, said this morning. “There is something for everyone.”

HOUSTON – Greg Lyons, adviser to the Houston Livestock 4-H Club, was named the chairman of the 1999 Shelby County 4-H Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to advise and assist in formulating the necessary policies and standards needed to conduct the county 4-H program.Serving on the officer team with Lyons are: Charisse Brining, vice chairman and adviser to Town and Country 4-H Club; Diane Aufderhaar, secretary and adviser to Botkins Builders 4-H Club; and Les Berning, adviser to Country Crossroads 4-H Club.
