PORT JEFFERSON — Hussey’s Restaurant at 8760 Broad St. in Port Jefferson announced on Facebook on Feb. 29 the restaurant will close on March 9 after decades in business.

The post received over 700 likes, 300 comments and 800 shares with customers sharing their memories — like weddings, proms, birthday parties and anniversaries — and their favorite menu items — like the prime rib, chicken dinner, tenderloin and coleslaw.

“So sad! That’s where my wife and I went on our first date! We have been going there on our anniversary for 32 years! Sure going to miss that place!!” Jeff Kizer commented on the post.

“My family has been enjoying Hussey’s for over 60 years. Craig and I celebrated our engagement at Hussey’s and many, many dinners with family and friends,” Leann Fourman commented. “It was my family’s favorite restaurant. We all moved to the Dayton area over 60 years ago and drove to Hussey’s at least 4-5 times a year to eat the famous chicken. I’m also pretty sure one or two of the carved ducks were carved by my dad. Best wishes to the staff and owners.”

“We ate often at Hussey’s. Mrs. Inderrieden and Mrs. Kah were waitresses back then and they were the best. We had our wedding dinner at Hussey’s 57 years ago come April. Along with the chicken, I loved the coleslaw,” Judy Seitz commented.

“Every time I hear the song Puff The Magic Dragon I think of my little brother, he just had to play that song on the jukebox every time we went to Hussey’s,” Karen Lindsey Cook commented.

“So many memories. Many years ago we went to church in Port Jefferson, it was a real treat to have chicken dinners after church. Our kids always fussed because we made them split the 4 piece dinner,” Jan Weber Barker commented. “Steve tells the story of he and Mike skipping school, spending the day at the restaurant and grilling steaks. We enjoyed many family meals there, never had a bad meal. And our first grandchild continues to carry on the Hussey name.”

“We went there when they were barely past the dirt floor stage. Fabulous chicken dinners. The most popular band was Bill? and The Country Lineman. We girls would swoon over Bill! (about 1961 or so),” Judy Handley-Oldiges commented.

Many memories also included the pond with the waterfowl that frequent the area.

“I enjoyed the great chicken and the beautiful view and relaxing atmosphere. Sweet memories of feeding the geese and watching the fish!” Sherry Arnett Scherack commented.

“My granddaughter and I are so afraid of birds and ducks, somehow that big white one would always stand in front of the entrance door!” Angie Bowman-Stiver commented.

“My husband proposed there. And he was chased by a goose at the time,” Lee Ann Brown commented.

“Many family meals and memories there as a child. I was assaulted by a duck there for my bag of bread,” Heather Ellis commented.

As confirmed at the Port Jefferson Council meeting on March 4, the property has been sold to Nicki and Chad New and another couple to be turned into a wedding venue.
