LIMA — Bellefontaine High School senior Diana Van Voorhis of Bellefontaine, Ohio won first place in the Fourth District of Ohio’s 2016 Congressional Art Competition. Her winning piece, “Lost in Time, Never Forgotten,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol along with other winners from around the country.

Congressman Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, 4th District, attended a reception recently honoring the winners of the competition. The reception was held at Temple Christian School in Lima, Ohio, and hosted by school superintendent Hunter Powell and Lima Baptist Temple’s senior pastor Al Elmore. The annual competition allows aspiring artists in high school to compete for the chance to feature a work of art in the U.S. Capitol.

Of the competition Jordan said, “We had a great number of submissions this year and an impressive display of talent from our district’s high schoolers. I’m so proud of Diana, Steven, Brody and Joshua, along with all of the Fourth District students who participated, for their hard work and enthusiasm.”

In addition to having her work displayed in the Capitol, Van Voorhis will receive two airfare tickets to Washington, D.C. to see her artwork on display.

Oberlin High School senior Steven Mentzer won second place with his work, “Dreaming of Grandeur.” Temple Christian School freshman Brody Bowman won third with his work, “Uncle Amos.” Sidney High School sophomore Joshua Marruffo received an honorable mention for his self-portrait.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
