Larry Monnin, of Sidney, reads the back of a book at the Amos Memorial Public Library’s biannual book fair on Wednesday. Monnin said he was looking for whatever “catches my eye.” The book sale began on Saturday and will end on this coming Saturday. Around 2,000 books have been sold.

New Shelby County radio communications system activated

SIDNEY — The recently installed public safety radio communication system was activated during a ceremony at a tower on Gearhart Road near the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. The ceremony capped off a multi-year project to upgrade the county’s communications infrastructure.

Looking Back: Old barn may have canal connection

An unassuming barn sits in the backyard of a duplex at 214 Franklin Street. Shelby County Historical Society Plat maps indicate that the barn was built between 1892 and 1897 next to the canal that once ran through the center of Sidney. The canal has since been filled in, but the barn remains.

Arbor Day ceremony held at Emerson Primary School

SIDNEY — Arbor Day in the city of Sidney was celebrated with a tree planting ceremony on Friday at Emerson Primary School. Two tulip poplar trees were planted outside the school, and several second-graders helped city officials spread mulch around each tree’s base.
